Our Last Night heeft weinig tijd voor interviews, de band is namelijk druk aan het touren door Europa. Dat is de eerste keer voor de heren, dus ze willen er ongetwijfeld geen moment van missen. Met de laatste plaat op zak is de band toch wel één van de grote jongens in het post-hardcore genre geworden. Gitarist en zanger, het cleane gedeelte, Matt Wentworth heeft uiteindelijk wel even tijd om wat te vertellen hoe het de band vergaat.
Het gaat goed met de band dus. De tour door Europa is een prachtige ervaring voor de jonge gasten voor wie het toch snel is gegaan. In 2008 tekende de heren bij Epitaph en sindsdien zit het hele verhaal in een stroomversnelling. De laatste plaat We Will All Evolve is nu een half jaartje uit en moet de belofte inlossen die debuut (voor het grote publiek althans) The Ghosts Among Us gecreëerd heeft. “Looking back at both albums, I don’t think either is better necessarily, just different. The biggest difference is Trevor’s scream and we experimented more with different styles on the new album.”
Toen de band startte was frontman Trevor net elf jaar oud. Het liep nu eenmaal zo voor het jongere broertje van Matt. Hij speelde geen instrument en wilde wel in de band, dan word je zanger. Een lange tijd moest moeder Wentworth dus al briefjes schrijven, waarop aangegeven stond dat Matt toezicht mocht houden op zijn broertje op de weg. Maar goed ook, je loopt als jonge band in de problemen. Gelukkig is dat voor Our Last Night nog niet gebeurd. “Hopefully we will never run into any legal issues, he’ll be eightteen in June so after that we should be safe from any legal problems.” Het touren is ook wel een van de mooiste dingen aan het spelen in een band voor Matt. “Just being on the road touring and being able to put out two records so far is great.”
Thuis heeft Matt een studio om in zijn vrije tijd wat in te hobbyen. Dan is hij dus ook gewoon bezig met muziek. Opnemen en mixen van andere bandjes, dat pikt hij dus tussen de tours door op. Als je hem dus vraagt of hij touren of studiotijd het leukst vindt staat dat de studio natuurlijk hoog in de ranglijst. “I would say that I love both in completely different ways. Being on tour is a crazy time, you get to meet so many people and play in front of so many great crowds. The studio is great because it’s where the songs finally come together and we get to let out all of our creativity. But I think I enjoy the actual writing process more.”
De band tekende ook bij Epitaph voor het debuut, dat lijkt natuurlijk nogal wat. Matt nuanceert dat dan weer mooi: “They put out our cd when we send it to them and that is about it.” Het valt allemaal wel mee dus, het staat vooral leuk op de achterkant van je plaat. De band heeft dit jaar nog een nieuwe plaat uitgebracht. Deze werd eerder door ROAR E-Zine al uitgebreid besproken. Voor Matt is de favoriete song van de laatste plaat ‘Across The Ocean’. “It took the longest to write and probably had the most work put into it.” Het nummer wat de band als eerste aan de wereld liet horen was ‘Elephants’. Waarom die titel? “Elephants was actually just a working title, had nothing to do with the actual song ha-ha. When I first started writing it I knew I wanted it to be a little heavier than the others songs I’d been writing. I needed something to call it so I titled it Elephants because they are literally heavy… stupid I know ha-ha.”
Matt heeft niet echt favoriete bands, maar als je er dan toch naar vraagt komt hij ook los. Circa Survive met de plaat Blue Sky Noise, The Graduate met Anhedonia, The Fray met het naar de band vernoemde album en tot slot Jack’s Mannquin met Everything in Transit. “Those never get old for me.” Dat weten we ook weer wat in onze platenkast ontbreekt, toch? Veel bands proberen vandaag de dag een boodschap in hun muziek te stoppen, iets wat het publiek meegegeven wordt. Dat, of de band claimt het graag te doen. Voor Our Last Night is dat niet het geval. “Our songs are about all sorts of things, negative or positive, ups and downs. There isn’t one thing we think everyone should believe or be all about. Everyone should just be themselves.”
Toekomstplannen heeft de band nog niet echt. “We have no idea ha-ha. Our plan is to just keep touring and doing our thing. Probably start writing for another album soon. We do have a couple really cool tours coming up in the US. One is with Alesana and the other with Haste The Day, other than that our future is a mystery to us. I guess that keeps it exciting though.” Gelijk heeft hij. We sluiten natuurlijk af met het vergelijken van de band met een gerecht. Geen moeilijke vraag voor Matt. “A really spicy Buffalo wing because it hurts so good.” Dan weten we ook weer wat ons te wachten staat op ROARFest II.
