De mannen van wereldberoemde – of moet ik zeggen ‘beruchte’ – metalcore-band Bring Me The Horizon worden natuurlijk gebombardeerd door de pers. Vier afgezegde afspraken, twintig uitgewisselde e-mails, enkele onbeantwoorde mailers en één phoner later krijg ik eindelijk Matt Nicholls, de drummer van Bring Me The Horizon aan de lijn. “How many interviews do you have per day?” – “Oh not many, for today it’s just this one and I didn’t even know I’d have it.” Oh.
De rockster van wereldniveau komt erg vriendelijk, zelfs ietwat verlegen over. Zo stelt hij beleeft ook wat vragen en giechelt hij bijna als ik hem een aantal complimenten geef over het fenomenale optreden van Bring Me The Horizon in de Melkweg, Amsterdam. “Thank you so much, I loved the show. But I love Amsterdam anyway, for various reasons. I love the place, the shows are always good and uhhm.. The weed is good. It’s just a cool place.” Matt vertelt dat de tour tot nu toe goed bevalt. “It’s been pretty good, the show’s been going really well.” Toch kan een tour slopend zijn. Niet zelden worden artiesten opgenomen in het ziekenhuis vanwege uitputting. “We’re used to touring, we get by easily when we’re on the road. We’re quite lucky to be on a bus, because we’ve got an Xbox and things to kill time with, plus we’re on tour with friends – like people we toured with before, it’s good vibes and everyone is hanging out.”
Op jonge leeftijd werd Bring Me The Horizon al opgepikt door Thirty Days of Night Records, de bandleden waren immers nog tieners toen zij hun eerste plaat Count Your Blessings uitbrachten in 2006. “It’s funny you know, because I never really liked playing the drums until I was sixteen. I’ve never really dreamed of this or expected the band to get this big. I just wanted to perform. I’m not taking this for granted and I’ll take it as it comes.” Eind 2010 kwam het derde album, There Is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let’s Keep It a Secret uit. In vergelijking met de twee voorgaande albums, lijkt het alsof de band is gegroeid naar een hoger niveau van kwaliteit en kundigheid. Maar tijd om te oefenen hebben de mannen niet. “We’ve grown slowly but surely. We’re slowly getting there. I guess we never really have time to practice, and the rare moments we’re at home we don’t really want to rehearse. The only time when we get to play is on the road so I guess we got better through touring and through experience, because the only time we’re together is on stage.”
Deze groei is goed terug te horen op de nieuwe plaat. In vergelijking met Suicide Season – die in 2008 uitkwam, hebben de mannen metalcore een stapje breder geïnterpreteerd. “It’s a good step forward, we took the core sound of Suicide Season and added to it and took it into different directions. I guess it turned out pretty cool, we just didn’t want to release the same album. We got the familiar sound and added all these things up to it. Not many people do this anymore, a lot of bands still do the same old shit over and over again. I guess you could say we’re progressive, but we still want to be a heavy band, you know. Because that’s what we are, although we’re all into different types of things such as electronic music, hiphop, ambient stuff. All of what we thought: why don’t we just incorporate it into our music? There’s nothing stopping us.”
Alle deuren zijn met deze dijk van een plaat geopend voor Bring Me The Horizon. Het tourlijstje ziet er dan ook voortreffelijk uit. “When we finish tour, we go home for a week. Then we’ll go to Indonesia, Japan, and Australia for a while. After that we’ll be in America for a month or two and then come back to England for tour. In the summer we’ll do some cool European festivals.” Zo staan de mannen ook op The Powerfest, op vijf juni 2011. “I like to play festivals, my favorite one is Metaltown in Gothenburg, Sweden. It’s cool doing festivals, you get to play for a bigger audience and the plus is that you’re getting to play for a lot of people that don’t really know who you are. So that gives them a good chance to see what we do.”
Het is heerlijk om te kunnen reizen, maar tegelijkertijd betaal je wel huur voor een thuishaven waar je nooit bent. Zo ziet het er naar uit dat de mannen maar één week thuis kunnen zijn in de komende zes maanden. “It’s fucking shit, yeah, I’m paying for storage really. I live with a friend in an appartment in Sheffield, England. But I’m never there.” Toch neemt Matt het huiselijke mee op tour, want op de vraag wanneer hij zijn moeder voor het laatst heeft gesproken, antwoordt hij enthousiast: “Yeah, yesterday! She called me and we talked for a while. I’m in regular contact with my family. My mum texts me all the time, and I talk to my brother and stepdad a lot. That’s so nice.”
Bring Me The Horizon zal in juni terug zijn in Nederland op The Powerfest 2011. Deze show is een echte aanrader, aangezien we tijdens het optreden in de Melkweg een paar weken geleden al konden zien dat de band enorm is gegroeid. De bandleden zijn uitgegroeid tot professionele muzikanten die een immense show kunnen neerzetten. Wees er dus bij!
