Hot Chip

Met een nieuw album voor de deur en een single er juist net uit, reizen frontmannen Alexis Taylor en Joe Goddard van Hot Chip door Europa om hun nieuwste werk te promoten. Vandaag zit Taylor ergens in Duitsland en Goddard tegenover ons aan tafel in het Backstage Hotel in Amsterdam. Het is een stad waar hij graag komt: Hot Chip heeft Nederland sinds 2005 al zestien keer bezocht, waarvan acht optredens in onze hoofdstad.

Een getal waar Goddard enigszins door is verrast, echter schijnt dit een normale kwestie te zijn voor de band. Hot Chip gaat werkelijk de hele wereld over: “We go through Europe, to Japan, the United States and South America. It’s funny to mention that people in South America have very good rhythm. There was one gig in Sao Paolo, where the first three rows of the crowd were like doing a synchronised dance routine. And people in Japan are very respectful to the band. They will clap very loudly and then are silent completely, just to hear what you’ve go to say.”

Het is duidelijk dat Hot Chip populair is over de hele wereld, en toch blijven ze steken in de underground scene. Ook op het komende album In Our Heads staat niet direct een track dat de commerciële doorbraak zou kunnen betekenen. De single die bij dit album hoort is ‘Night and Day’. Waarom is voor dit nummer gekozen? “We felt like it was kind of exciting, an unusual sounding track. I like it when a single from a new band’s album is cool and crazy. The rest of the album has the same kind of tempo and feeling. The songs fit together in a cool way.”

Een andere track van het album dat enigszins afwijkt is ‘Flutes’. “It was mostly to give people a taste of what the album was going to be like. Due to the length of the track and its lack of a catchy chorus, it was not brought out as the first single. It is one of my personal favorites though, together with ‘Motion Sickness. I like the way they kind of grow. They build up and reach like a peak.”

Hoe zijn deze en andere nummers op de plaat precies ontstaan? “Usually we work on tracks separate. It starts of in my house or Alexis’ house. We come up with a beginning of an idea, start sharing it and then everyone contributes to it. Sometimes we all play together and write songs that way, but not that often really.” In tegenstelling tot wat andere artiesten doen, zoeken jullie dus geen huisje in het bos op, om hier gezamenlijk aan een album te werken? “I wouldn’t mind trying that though. Maybe it will result in quite a different album.”

In Our Heads kent net als het oudere werk van Hot Chip veel geluidseffecten die live via de synthesizer ten gehore worden gebracht. Maar hoe komen jullie eigenlijk aan deze effecten? “In ‘Now There Is Nothing’ there’s a clap that is pinched down. It sounds a bit like a barking dog. The idea came from Prince’s track ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend,’ which has similar drum sounds. In ‘Let Me Be Him’ children and birds sounds were used, because I wanted the song to have the feeling of the 80s, slightly new-age. And I like the bird sounds anyway, because they remind me of synthesizers, haha.”

Zorgt het feit dat Hot Chip in een adem genoemd wordt met electropop ervoor dat jullie het gevoel hebben aan verwachtingen te moeten voldoen: “I just use synthesizers because I like them. I don’t really think of ourselves as want to be electropop. We just like to be between different things. With ‘Flutes’ for example, we did something different than we’re used to, to show what else we can do.”

Ondanks de andere insteek, is het nog steeds duidelijk Hot Chip. Het lijkt erop dat jullie echt een eigen geluid hebben. “It makes me feel happy when people say that we’ve got our own sound. I like it when groups have an identity like that. I know a few bands that are a bit similar, like New Look and Metronomy, but they are still a little different.”

In Our Heads wordt 11 juni uitgebracht en hierna is 14 juni de eerste show. Wat gaan jullie in de tussentijd doen? “A lot of practicing. We want to get really good, we want to show to be tight. We will do some interviews and promo-stuff as well. Also, me and my wife are having another baby in the end of May, so I’ll need some time off then.”

Daarna staan verschillende festivals op het programma. Hoe is het om op festivals te spelen? “We have had great times at festivals, definiatly. This summer, there will be like 25. Often we bump into the same people, since some bands just do a lot of festival stuff and the line-up is similar. Some are my friends, like the members from LCD Soundsystem, and seeying them every weekend makes me quite happy. Of course, there also are bands who are more like your enemy.” Wat zou je zelf graag willen zien op een festival? “I would like to see some new rap stuff, like A$AP Rocky and Odd Future. I’d love to see The Weekend and New Order as well.”

Tot slot: Hoe lang ben je? “I don’t know…It think it’s about 6 foot. Or 6.2. I don’t know how tall that is in metres. Maybe just make something up, because I may be too short, like a midget. Just make it six foot.”
